Brain Heart Infusion Agar
A general purpose nutritious agar base. The medium can be used with the addition of 7% defibrinated blood and the medium will support the growth of a wide range of fastidious organisms. The medium is not recommended for the determination of haemolytic reactions because of the glucose content. The use of porcine material in this product enures there are no Specified Risk Materials (SRM’S) with respect to Transmissible Spongeform Encephalopathies (TSE’S). Formula grams per litre pH 7.4 +/- 0.2 Brain-Heart Infusion Solids (porcine) 17.5 Appearance: Pale Straw colour, Tryptose 10.0 clear gel. Glucose 2.0 Sodium chloride 5.0 Disodium phosphate 2.5 Bacteriological Agar 12.0 Preparation Suspend 48 grams powder in 1 litre of distilled water. Allow to soak for 10 minutes then swirl to mix. Autoclave at 1210C for 15 minutes. Cool to 470C then pour into petri dishes. Storage of Prepared Medium Plates should be stored in the dark at 2-80C. Plates should be used within 1 week. Directions for use: Surface, streaking out to single colonies. Incubate at time and temperature to suit specimen/organisms.
