A total of 2500 serotypes of Salmonella are known and they are the main cause of bacterial gastroenteritis. Worldwide there are approximately 93.8 million cases of salmonellosis each year causing 155,000 deaths. Most of the salmonellosis are provoked by the Salmonella serovars S. Typhimurium and S.
