I made a blog post for CHROMagar, if you exist on LinkedIn (and follow us!) you will have seen this information before, but now its here too!
In 1993, Dr Alain Rambach founded CHROMagar, which now supplies the widest range of dehydrated chromogenic culture media. Dr Alain Rambach is the original inventor, and pioneer of chromogenic culture media technology, with his first invention and patent of chromogenic culture medium being in 1979.
Why are they dehydrated? It remains as dehydrated medium to help simplify logistics and gains flexibility in transportation and storage, as it can be shipped and held at room temperature. This ensures the product itself has a long shelf-life, as you only prepare the plates as, and when, you need them.
Advantages of chromogenic media Using chromogenic media means bacterial differentiation is easy! Thanks to the specific enzymatic reactions for each bacterium, colony colour interpreted for identification. This means your results can be visually interpreted, minimising the need for additional complex, and time-consuming, testing.
CHROMagar Vs Traditional Media
Superior detection performance of CHROMagar, allows for the replacement of multiple traditional media in the same test, reducing manpower requirements and minimising space and waste in cold storage and incubators.
Greater specificity of CHROMagar enables simpler confirmatory tests, minimising the need for expensive biochemical panels.
Just one colony is needed for confirmation, there is no need to investigate multiple colonies with different morphologies.
No need for purification subculture, resulting in a streamlined process with reduced labour and faster results.
